William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, president, was honored Nov. 9 by the University Health System Foundation as a 2018 Texas Diabetes Institute Wall of Honor inductee and Vision of Research award winner.

“Dr. Henrich is a physician, a healer, a specialist in kidney disease, the author of over 300 articles, and the founding editor of a book called Henrich’s Principles and Practice of Dialysis,” said James Adams, chairman of the University Health System Board of Managers. “But he is also very passionate about research. Dr. Henrich’s support in advancing it is vitally important, because there is not one of us who doesn’t have friends with diabetes, relatives with diabetes and people we see on the street with diabetes.”

Dr. Henrich said: “In my work, research is the key to a better tomorrow. Diabetes accounts for a high percentage of renal damage that leads to the need for dialysis or transplantation, and just by itself, it can subtract up to a decade of a person’s life. People can’t work, they can’t support their families, they can’t enjoy life. If the Texas Diabetes Institute weren’t there, and people had to go from place to place to place all the time, appointments would be missed and it would be massively inconvenient for the patients we serve. The Texas Diabetes Institute is a beacon for San Antonio to be proud of.”

Other Texas Diabetes Institute Wall of Honor inductees were the Witte Museum for education and Rosemary H. Kowalski, founder of Rosemary’s Catering and chairman emeritus of the RK Group, for the heart of care.

Prior to the inductions, Jane Lynch, M.D., the Greehey Family Foundation Chair in Pediatric Endocrinology at UT Health San Antonio, discussed the alarming upward trend of Type 2 diabetes cases in children and young adults.
