The Health Science Center is pleased to announce the fourth annual Presidential Distinguished Lecture, featuring founder of the Texas Heart Institute and the world-renowned surgeon who performed the United States’ first successful heart transplant, Denton A. Cooley, M.D. Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., president of the Health Science Center, invites the community to join Dr. Cooley as he presents: “My 60 Years of Cardiovascular Surgery,” at 11 a.m. Oct. 20 in the Health Science Center auditorium. A reception will follow in the auditorium foyer.

A 1941 graduate of The University of Texas, Dr. Cooley later received his MD degree from Johns Hopkins University where he remained as an intern and assisted in the first “blue baby” operation to correct an infant’s congenital heart defect.

In 1969, Dr. Cooley became the first heart surgeon to implant an artificial heart in a man. Often referred to as the “King of Hearts,” Dr. Cooley performed as many as 25 heart operations a day when he was still practicing; and he and his team have performed more than 100,000 open heart operations at his hospital.

“Those of us who are surgeons, and especially transplant surgeons, owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Cooley and others who made so many advancements in the operating room,” Dr. Cigarroa said.

Dr. Cooley is a member of more than 50 professional societies around the world and has received more than 120 prestigious honors and awards.

The community is encouraged to attend his address that will inspire and provide you with the opportunity to hear the legend behind the pioneer of heart transplant surgery.

The Presidential Distinguished Lecture is sponsored by Fulbright & Jaworski, L.L.P., attorneys at law.
