Barbara Quillin, M.P.A.S., program director for the Physician Assistant (PA) Studies program in the School of Health Professions, has been named Educator of the Year by the Texas Academy of Physician Assistants. The award was presented at the  TAPA Primary Care Conference at the Westin Galleria Hotel in Houston on Feb. 20.

“I am humbled to receive the Educator of the Year award,” Quillin said. “Making an impact on the future generations of physician assistants is my life’s mission. I am proud to be a part of helping make lives better through educating the best future physician assistants that the HSC has to offer.”

A PA is a nationally certified and state-licensed medical professional. PAs practice medicine on health care teams with physicians and other providers. PA is one of the fastest growing health care professions with employment growth rate of 38 percent between 2011 and 2022, according to the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2015, PA has been ranked as the “Best Job in America” by Glassdoor and as one of the top 10 best jobs by U.S. News and World Report.

The Health Science Center’s PA program is a rigorous 30-month program that prepares health care providers through an interprofessional curriculum, extensive clinical rotations, laboratory experiences and research. Students also have the opportunity to participate in outreach programs that emphasize community service and health care in the rural and underserved areas of South Texas.

“I am very proud of our PA program, and this is terrific recognition of Barbara’s hard work and dedication,” said David C. Shelledy, Ph.D., dean of the School of Health Professions.
