Regional Academic Health Center turns 10 this month; celebration is June 14

WHAT:
10th anniversary celebration of the Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC), a campus of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio

WHEN:
6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 14

WHERE:
RAHC Medical Education Division, 2102 Treasure Hills Blvd., Harlingen

WHO:
Speakers are William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, president, UT Health Science Center San Antonio; The Honorable Eddie Lucio Jr., who represents Texas Senate District 27; and Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., executive vice chancellor for health affairs with The University of Texas System. Other potential interviewees include Francisco González-Scarano, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs, UT Health Science Center, and Leonel Vela, M.D., M.P.H., regional dean of the RAHC.

WHY:
The RAHC, dedicated June 28, 2002, is the home base where dozens of School of Medicine students annually receive their clinical education prior to completing their medical degree. The RAHC is also the nerve center of a three-year internal medicine residency program that is accredited for 15 residents at a time.

VISUALS:
The anniversary theme is ¡Viva! RAHC and, centering on this, a narrative will be accompanied by formation of the words ¡Viva! RAHC on placards. Other anniversary events are listed below.

NOTES:
The celebration will include an announcement about the Colonel H. William Card, Jr. Endowed Professorship, named in honor of former Harlingen Mayor Bill Card.

The anniversary also honors the following:

  • The RAHC Medical Research Division in Edinburg is home to basic science research on diseases and conditions that disproportionately affect border populations;
  • The RAHC Clinical Research Unit in Harlingen seeks to bring more clinical trials to the Valley, giving patients access to the most up-to-date care;
  • The RAHC reaches out to Valley residents through education, research, community service learning projects and other community resources including its medical library.
  • RAHC clinical and educational partners provide invaluable time and resources. (See list of community supporters and partners below.)

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, one of the country’s leading health sciences universities, ranks in the top 3 percent of all institutions worldwide receiving federal funding.
