San Antonio Express-News: Baby boxes provide a safe place for infants to sleep

Some infants in San Antonio soon will be sleeping as Finnish babies do — in cardboard boxes.  After giving birth, 130 mothers who deliver at University Hospital will receive “baby boxes” filled with clothing, diapers and other necessities for infants. The box, which is lined with a firm mattress, doubles as a bed for the newborn. It’s modeled after similar boxes issued by the government to new mothers in Finland that have been credited with helping reduce the country’s infant mortality rate.
