School of Health Professions sponsors conference on the many issues of aging

Free and open to the public

SAN ANTONIO (March 8, 2012) — A physician and author from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio who has been featured on radio talk shows and in newspapers across the U.S. will be the luncheon keynote speaker for a conference on managing the issues in aging.

The conference, sponsored by the UT Health Science Center’s School of Health Professions, is free and open to the public. It will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, March 23, at the Omni San Antonio Hotel, 9821 Colonnade Blvd.

The theme of the conference is “Issues in Aging for Families and Caregivers.”

“This conference will be helpful to individuals who are in midlife and older, as well as their family members and caregivers,” said Juanita S. Wallace, Ph.D., interim dean of the School of Health Professions. “This is for everyone who wants to learn how to stay healthy, adapt to the changes that occur with aging, and provide for loved ones or patients as they age.”

Jerald Winakur, M.D., is the luncheon keynote speaker. He will speak on the topic of “My Father and Me: Caregiving in Aging America.” Dr. Winakur is a clinical professor of medicine and an associate faculty member of the Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics at the UT Health Science Center. He has practiced internal and geriatric medicine for more than 30 years. After listening to patients’ concerns about the deteriorating health of loved ones in old age, he found himself in the same situation when his father experienced a long decline and death from Alzheimer’s disease. In 2009 he wrote “Memory Lessons: A Doctor’s Story,” which led to a syndicated newspaper column, as well as numerous television and radio talk show interviews. A book signing and sale of Dr. Winakur’s book will be held after his presentation.

Ten speakers will give presentations throughout the day on such topics as “Frailty: The Next Epidemic?” “Physical Activity: A Key to Successful Living,” “Aging in Place,” “Who Decides When You Can’t?” and “Caring for the Caregiver.” See a complete list of the speakers and their topics in the conference agenda.

The conference is funded in part by a gift from the Berneice Castella Endowment.
