For the third consecutive year, San Antonio Military Health System (SAMHS), The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio™), and The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) are bringing together an estimated 400 armed forces and civilian scientists, health care professionals, residents and trainees to spotlight best clinical practices and innovative research being performed in Military City, USA.
The annual San Antonio Military Health System & Universities Research Forum (SURF) demonstrates the strong commitment and value placed by UT Health San Antonio and UTSA in supporting the U.S. military’s research mission to bring healing to conditions affecting military men and women and their caregivers.
Supported by the San Antonio Life Sciences Institute and the Military Health Institute, SURF aims to foster partnerships and build multidisciplinary networks between military, academic and community organizations to advance evidence-based practice and research in health care.
SURF 2017 begins at 8 a.m. Friday, June 16, at the UTSA Main Campus. The forum will open with a continental breakfast. During the course of the day, attendees will participate in symposia and breakout sessions; connect and network with scholars and practitioners from SAMHS, academic institutions, public government agencies and private organizations; and share research, practice, policy and collaborations in paper and poster sessions.
During lunch, attendees are invited to listen to keynote speaker John Holcomb, M.D., FACS, professor of surgery, Center for Translational Injury, UT Health Houston McGovern Medical School. Dr. Holcomb will present Back to the Future: Evolution of Trauma Resuscitation Over the Last 153 Years. Holcomb is a 23-year veteran of the Army and as a military physician was trained in tactical combat casualty care. He is a recipient of the Jonathan Letterman Medical Excellence Award for his commitment to improving patient outcomes through innovation.
