South Texans ready to lace up and conquer cancer at annual ‘Give Cancer the Boot’

WHAT:         The Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center, is taking steps to conquer cancer with its 7th annual Give Cancer the Boot Survivorship 5K and 1-Mile Walk. The event will be an opportunity to celebrate life and give friends and family members a chance to show support for their loved ones.

The race is open to all ages and fitness levels in the community. Participants can choose to run a chip-timed 5K or walk a mile. Various vendors, activities and entertainment are planned for attendees to enjoy, including performances by Folklorico dancers, a visit with San Antonio Fire Department Sparky the mascot, children’s activities, community vendor booths and other activities.

Cancer survivors will receive a free race entry and a special purple shirt representing cancer survivorship, and VIP treatment in a dedicated tent offering complimentary chair massages, mini makeup make-overs and other amenities.

Registration is $35 through Thursday, April 4, or $40 on Friday, April 5, and race day. Cancer survivors and children under age 12 will receive a free race entry.

The first 750 to cross the finish line will receive a custom finisher medal. Cancer survivors will be greeted with a carnation at the finish line. Prizes will be awarded to winners based on age categories and overall male and female.

Proceeds will benefit Patient and Family Services at the Mays Cancer Center, a program providing essential social service support to patients, including transportation for appointments, nutrition and clinical dietitian services, and assistance in helping patients address numerous barriers to care.

WHEN:         Saturday, April 6

Runners and walkers are expected to arrive by 7:30 a.m. to pick up packets or register for the race.

Race begins at 9 a.m. for runners and 9:10 a.m. for walkers.

The prize presentation starts at 10:15 a.m.

WHERE:       Mays Cancer Center, 7979 Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, TX 78229, (along the San Antonio Medical Foundation jogging trail on the UT Health San Antonio campus)

WHO:           Cancer survivors, family members, friends, health care providers, caregivers, plus more than 800 runners and walkers.
