MEDIA ADVISORY

WHAT:         The Mays Cancer Center at UT Health San Antonio is taking steps to conquer cancer with its annual Give Cancer the Boot Survivorship 5K and 1-Mile Walk. The event will be an opportunity to celebrate life and give friends and family members a chance to show support for their loved ones.

The race is open to all ages and fitness levels in the community. Participants can choose to run a chip-timed 5K or walk a mile. Various vendors, activities and entertainment are planned for attendees to enjoy, including performances by Folklorico dancers, a visit with many local mascots, including Sparky from the San Antonio Fire Department, children’s activities, community vendor booths and other activities. Free oral cancer screenings will also be available.

The University Health Mobile Mammography Unit will be on-site from 8 a.m. to noon providing 2D and 3D mammograms for the community. Financial assistance is available for uninsured women. Register at www.healthyUexpress.com or by calling 210-358-7020.

Cancer survivors receive a free race entry and a special purple shirt representing cancer survivorship, and VIP treatment in a dedicated tent offering complimentary amenities, like decorative hair painting, mini manicures, one-on-one consultations with specialists from StretchLab and Evolve Human Optimization Labs.

New this year is a Superhero kids dash, an exciting, kid-friendly, short race where young heroes of all ages get to show off their super speed and strength in provided capes or their favorite superhero costume.

The first 1,000 participants to cross the finish line will receive a custom finisher medal.

Proceeds will benefit the Patient and Family Assistance Fund at the Mays Cancer Center, a program providing essential social service support, including transportation for appointments, nutrition and clinical dietitian services, and assistance in helping patients address numerous barriers to care. The program relies solely on fundraising, donations and philanthropic partnerships to keep its services running.
