In one of the grandest show-and-tell operations of the year, more than 3,600 students in Bexar County had the opportunity to hear from medical doctors who visited their schools March 30. The School of Medicine at the Health Science Center sent more than 30 physicians to area campuses.

Doctors’ Day visits aim to expose young listeners to careers in medicine, nursing, dentistry, a related health profession or health science research. The doctors also provide personal stories of their journeys to their present professional positions. Additionally, as a memento of the day and the presentation, each student attending the presentation at each school was given a “Future Doctor” T-shirt as a gift from the Health Science Center.

The first Doctors’ Day observance was held in 1933 in Georgia. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed legislation designating March 30 as National Doctors’ Day.
