March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. The colon and rectal team of the Cancer Therapy & Research Center and UT Medicine are gearing up for an entire month of education, support and awareness to inform the public about colon cancer facts and prevention.

Colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death among men and women in the U.S., but many colon cancers can be prevented with regular testing. The American Cancer Society recommends—if you are 50 or older—that you talk with your doctor about colon cancer screening. Only about 60 percent of adults of screening age are up-to-date on their colon cancer screening, and many have never been screened at all.

UT Medicine, the clinical practice of the Health Science Center, will kick off Cancer Awareness Month with the display of a giant colon at the Medical Arts & Research Center (MARC) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 4. Attendees can walk through the colon and view healthy tissue/colons as well as polyps or other signs of disease. The display is free and open to all.
