The Center for Brain Health (Opening in 2024-25)

With more than 50 studies, departments and centers, the Center for Brain Health at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio will be home to the institution’s many brain health initiatives. For a complete overview of these vital programs, visit advancingbrainhealth.org.

Recently, UT Health San Antonio received $60 million in PUF bond proceeds that will provide research infrastructure needed to support planned buildings on the health science center’s north campus. One of the programs enhanced will be the Center for Brain Health, a multi-phase project.

The Center for Brain Health will unite neurology and clinical trials in one building. Faculty of the Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases and all neurology specialists will be located immediately next to UT Health Physicians’ current flagship clinical building, the Medical Arts and Research Center. Consultantships between specialties and with primary care will be fostered. The Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies will be across the street, also affording synergy between scientists and physicians in aging and brain health.

The Center for Brain Health will include an imaging suite and a non-oncology infusion suite for patient care and clinical trials. The imaging suite will have a 7-Tesla magnet to be used in cutting-edge research. The building will be designed for the future and feature ease of access for patients and their loved ones.

The Glenn Biggs Institute, in partnership with UT Rio Grande Valley, is a National Institute on Aging-Designated Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC). This national center of excellence is the only NIA ADRC in the state of Texas currently. The Biggs Institute is conducting dozens of clinical trials in the field of dementia.

Of the $60 million in PUF proceeds recently secured, approximately $50 million will be used to construct a central energy plant and approximately $10 million will be used to expand a laboratory animal vivarium in support of these critically important endeavors.
