Join us in welcoming our new faculty members in radiation oncology, medical oncology and surgical oncology.

Carissia Calvo-Strube, MD

Carissia Calvo-Strube, MD, joins the team at Mays Cancer Center as an assistant professor within the  Division of Surgical Oncology. She is a fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist who specializes in the surgical management of benign breast disease, breast cancer and oncoplastic surgery.

Dr. Calvo-Strube grew up in Weslaco, TX, a small town in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. She earned her medical degree at the Texas A&M College of Medicine. She completed her residency in general surgery at UT Health San Antonio, during which time she was selected to serve as administrative chief resident and was an active member of the residency education and advisory committee. She received advanced training through a fellowship in breast surgical oncology at UT Southwestern.

Dr. Calvo-Strube is excited to be back in San Antonio and is looking forward to working with the exceptional team at the Mays Cancer Center.

Devi Meyyappan, MD

Devi Meyyappan, MD, will be joining the Mays Cancer Center as an assistant professor in the Division of   Hematology-Oncology. She is a medical oncologist and will specialize in treating head and neck cancers.

Dr. Meyyappan earned her medical degree from Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University in India. She completed her residency training in internal medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island in   Brooklyn, New York, and then received advanced training through fellowships in medical oncology and geriatric medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch of Galveston.

She is certified in both internal medicine and geriatrics and soon will be certified in medical oncology. Dr. Meyyappan brings to UT Health San Antonio a passion to develop new cancer therapeutics and medical education. Her clinical practice will emphasize age-sensitive issues and quality of care with a specialization in head and neck cancers.

Marcela Mazo, MD

Marcela Mazo, MD, will join as an assistant professor in the Division of Hematology-Oncology focusing on breast medical oncology.

She obtained her medical degree from CES University in Medellin, Colombia, in 2007. She then attended  The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where she completed a year of research followed by an internship and residency in internal medicine, then a fellowship in hematology/oncology. In  2012, she was awarded the Outstanding Resident Medicine Clerkship.

Dr. Mazo has a great interest in solid tumor malignancies in the Hispanic population as well as the different health disparities that affect our community. She has worked in a medically underserved area of the city of  San Antonio for the past 5 years but decided to return to academia to work on her true passion: Breast cancer care and breast cancer research.

Dr. Mazo holds certifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine, Hematology and Medical  Oncology. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Society of Hematology (ASH).

Neil Bryan Newman, MD

Neil Bryan Newman, MD, joined us in August as an assistant professor in the Department of Radiation  Oncology specializing in gastrointestinal oncology. He completed his residency in radiation oncology from  Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was also chief resident. Dr. Newman received his medical and Master of Science degree in clinical and translational research from Rutgers University.

Dr. Newman has experience in stereotactic radiosurgery, stereotactic body radiation, proton radiotherapy and interstitial brachytherapy. In addition to his clinical skills, he has a significant research background. He has published more than 20 co-authored papers.
