With very heavy hearts, we write to inform you that our beloved President William L. Henrich passed away this morning following unexpected complications from a second stem cell transplantation. He was a remarkable leader and an exceptional person.

In his 15 years as president, Dr. Henrich transformed our UT Health Science Center San Antonio into a top-ranked academic health center, with world-class programs in cancer, obesity and diabetes, dementia and aging. He was a visionary leader and a joy to work with, and his creativity, hard work and passion will always be examples for all of us. His laugh will ring through our corridors for many years. Among the many people we have known both professionally and personally, he gave the most of himself to all of us. Our prayers go out to his wife, Mary, and their two children, John and Emily, and their five grandchildren.

This is a devastating loss to all of us, and we hope your fond memories of Dr. Henrich carry you through the days and years ahead.

There will be news releases and announcements about Dr. Henrich’s memorial service soon. But for now, let’s all keep Mary and the entire Henrich family in our thoughts and prayers.

With deepest respect and sadness,

Rob Hromas, MD James B. Milliken
Acting President Chancellor
