UT Health San Antonio named official sports medicine partner of San Antonio Missions baseball

A continuing commitment to support community wellness, partnership

UT Health San Antonio has been named the official sports medicine partner of the San Antonio Missions, marking the latest in a series of strategic partnerships that strengthen its commitment to expert care, community wellness and support for athletes at every level.

The partnership brings UT Health San Antonio’s nationally recognized sports medicine program to the Missions’ dugout, building on similar high-profile collaborations with the San Antonio Spurs and UTSA Athletics. Physicians from UT Health San Antonio will be present at every Missions home game, providing immediate, on-site care and giving players access to the institution’s full network of specialists and services.

“This partnership is about more than covering games — it’s about elevating care for athletes while strengthening our connection to the San Antonio community,” said Robert Quinn, MD, chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at UT Health San Antonio. “We are proud to bring best-in-class sports medicine to the field and to continue supporting health, safety and performance at every level of play.”

Known for pioneering advances in orthopaedic care, UT Health San Antonio is the only practice in South Texas treating the full spectrum of orthopaedic conditions, Quinn said. Its sports medicine program, based at UT Health at Kyle Seale Parkway, is home to the same team trusted by professional and collegiate athletes in San Antonio.

David Gasaway, general manager of the San Antonio Missions, said the partnership with UT Health San Antonio strengthens player care on and off the field and supports the organization’s long-term vision for the team and South Texas.

“UT Health San Antonio brings an unmatched reputation for clinical excellence and innovation,” said David Gasaway, general manager of the San Antonio Missions. “The institution’s experience supporting top-tier athletes, including Division I programs and the San Antonio Spurs, gives us total confidence that our players are in the best hands. This partnership is built on a shared commitment to excellence and serving the broader San Antonio community.”

In addition to its new medical partnership with the Missions, UT Health San Antonio is proud to serve as the title partner of the Missions Rookie League — a summer baseball program that provides inner-city youth a chance they might not otherwise have to play baseball.

Now in its 25th season, the league is a collaboration between the Missions CARE Foundation and the San Antonio Police Athletic League, which provides mentorship and support through volunteer officers who serve as umpires. Fully funded by the Missions CARE Foundation, the program brings together more than 300 youth each summer for fun, teamwork and positive first interactions with law enforcement.

As title sponsor, UT Health San Antonio’s name will appear on Rookie League jerseys, and the sports medicine team at UT Health San Antonio will support the program by offering guidance on stretching, nutrition and injury prevention – helping young athletes build healthy habits that last a lifetime.

While the Missions have not designated an official team physician, the sports medicine team at UT Health San Antonio will provide care throughout the season. Among them is Alberto Oseguera, MD, a sports medicine physician at UT Health San Antonio.

“This is an exciting opportunity for UT Health San Antonio,” Oseguera said. “By collaborating with the Missions, we’re able to continue extending our care beyond the clinic and into the heart of the community.”
