UT Health San Antonio schools recognized among nation’s best

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio received national recognition in the U.S. News and World Report’s list of best graduate schools for 2025.

The list ranked programs from the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, the School of Nursing and the School of Health Professions among the best in the country.

U.S. News and World Report produces graduate school rankings each year to programs that exemplify academic excellence, impactful research and leadership in health education, recognizing programs that advance excellence on the national stage. Only fully accredited programs in good standing during the survey period are ranked. Methodology for rankings is based on faculty resources, academic achievement of entering students and their career paths, and reputational assessments by other schools’ deans and residency directors.

The Long School of Medicine continues to earn national recognition for its impact and excellence, maintaining a strong position among 99 medical schools training primary care physicians and among 105 research-focused institutions. As part of U.S. News and World Report’s updated tier-based evaluation system — now in its second year — this distinction highlights the school’s balanced strength in both clinical education and medical research. It’s a reflection of a vibrant academic community committed to advancing health care, empowering future physicians and driving meaningful innovation in medicine.

“We are honored to be recognized among the nation’s best medical schools for both primary care education and medical research in the 2025 U.S. News and World Report rankings,” said Robert A. Hromas, MD, FACP, dean of the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine. “This dual recognition reflects our commitment to training compassionate, community-focused physicians while also advancing groundbreaking research that shapes the future of medicine. These rankings reflect the incredible work of our faculty, students and researchers who are deeply committed to improving lives on both a local and global scale.”

The School of Nursing’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program was ranked in the top quarter of programs, taking the No. 40 spot out of 158 qualifying programs, up from the No. 69 last year. The rankings assessed programs designed for in-person, hybrid and flexible learning graduate programs and calculated scores based on research activity, faculty resources, student excellence and qualitative ratings from experts.

“Our increase in ranking is due to the high-quality faculty and clinical partners in our community that have opened their doors for precepting students,” said Sonya Renae Hardin, PhD, MBA/MHA, APRN, FAAN, dean of the School of Nursing.

In the School of Health Professions, the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program ranked 35th out of 206 qualifying programs, putting it within the top 17% of ranked programs in the U.S. The Doctor of Occupational Therapy program ranked 39th out of 282 programs, moving into the top 14%. In its second year of eligibility for the rankings, the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program moved up to No. 120 out of 283 programs ranked, finishing in the top 42%. The Doctor of Physical Therapy program ranked 132nd out of 264 programs.

“Our health professions programs at UT Health San Antonio provide outstanding training and education, and we are very proud of their continued national recognition,” said David Shelledy, PhD, RRT, RPFT, FAARC, FASAHP, dean of the School of Health Professions.

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences ranked 100 out of 290 in the publication’s list of the Best Biological Science Programs for 2022. And, while U.S. News and World Report no longer ranks dental schools, UT Health San Antonio’s School of Dentistry was ranked number No. 1 in 1993, 1995 and 1996, the last year the publication ranked U.S. dental schools.
