Students at Texas A&M University-San Antonio now have a clear pathway to pursue a nursing degree at UT Health San Antonio, thanks to a collaborative agreement signed by the two universities. The agreement provides two options for A&M-SA students to gain acceptance to the UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing.
Students can complete prerequisites at A&M-SA and then transfer to UT Health to finish the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN), or they can complete their bachelor’s degree at A&M-SA and then enter an accelerated BSN program at UT Health.
“This agreement keeps students on track to take the correct courses so they do not waste money and time taking courses that do not help them accomplish their goal of becoming a nurse,” explained David Byrd, Ph.D., associate dean for admissions and student services at UT Health’s School of Nursing. “With the rising cost of higher education, agreements like these can help students to minimize loan debt and begin practice sooner.”
Beginning this fall, A&M-SA students interested in transferring to UT Health must earn a minimum of 3.6 grade point average (GPA) in math and science courses and have an overall GPA of 3.6. Students must also receive a minimum score of 80 on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) and a minimum 69 on the reading portion of the TEAS, a nursing school entrance exam.
“There is a shortage of qualified nurses in Texas and across the country,” said A&M-SA Provost Mike O’Brien, Ph.D. “Through this collaboration with UT Health San Antonio, we are creating a better pipeline of students who can help reduce the shortage and better serve those in need.”
