UT Health San Antonio & UTSA athletic partnership features world-class care for student athletes

UT Health San Antonio’s partnership with UTSA brings world-class care to student athletes.

For the third year, UT Health San Antonio will serve as the exclusive official health care partner of The University of Texas at San Antonio athletics programs, including football, basketball, baseball, volleyball and soccer programs.

As part of the partnership, the two-time conference champion UTSA football team will take the home field with Ken O. Kenneth-Nwosa, MD, the Roadrunner’s team physician and sports medicine physician from UT Health San Antonio, who will be on the sidelines to offer care if needed. Orthopaedic surgeons Thomas DeBerardino, MD, Phil Jacobs, MD and Ian Whitney, MD round out the medical team. Consulting specialists including cardiologists, primary care, ophthalmology and optometry, and physical medicine and rehabilitation are also supporting team members.

The medical team focuses on preventing common injuries, recognizing and treating concussions, understanding the role that proper stretching, hydration and nutrition play in keeping student-athletes healthy, performing surgery if needed and determining when a student has fully recovered and is safe to return to play. Student-athletes also have access to over 800 other specialists within UT Health San Antonio.
