UT Medicine San Antonio Unveils Art Donated by AT&T

SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 4, 2010) — AT&T Corp.* will donate artwork to the School of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. Francisco González-Scarano, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine and the Health Science Center’s vice president for medical affairs, said the pieces will be displayed in the UT Medicine San Antonio Medical Arts & Research Center (MARC).

Dr. González and his wife, Barbara J. Turner, M.D., M.S.Ed., will host a reception to thank AT&T at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, at the MARC, located at 8300 Floyd Curl Drive in the South Texas Medical Center. The reception is by invitation only. UT Medicine San Antonio is the practice group of School of Medicine physicians who see patients in multiple specialties.

The arts are critical to the well-being of a community in many ways. AT&T is committed to sharing their collection as an educational resource through loans, donations and tours as well as with charitable organizations and communities where access to art is limited. The collection embodies AT&T’s mission of global outreach, diverse culture and innovative forms of communication.

“We are happy to donate these original works of art so that patients and guests visiting the Medical Arts & Research Center will be able to enjoy them,” said Michelle Thomas, assistant vice president – external affairs, AT&T Services Inc. “AT&T is proud of our longstanding relationship with the UT Health Science Center and our support of its missions for education, medical research, clinical care and community service.”

Dr. González said: “AT&T has been a longtime friend of our institution and we are very grateful for this gift. Our goal is for UT Medicine San Antonio to be the preferred provider of medical care in our city and region. The MARC, a state-of-the-art facility, is the portal into UT Medicine, and this artwork is one of the many amenities that will comfort patients and their families.”

Nine works by 20th century American and British artists are being placed in the MARC. The pieces include oils, acrylics and watercolors. The artists are Candida Alvarez, Edward Avedisian, Richard Hennessy, Doug Ohlson, Joel Bass and Sharon Sutton.
