UT San Antonio: The story of our new institution

 

Effective Sept. 1, 2025, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and The University of Texas at San Antonio officially merged to become The University of Texas at San Antonio, or UT San Antonio. The integration of these two powerhouses — now one world-class institution — created the third-largest public research university in Texas.

UT San Antonio serves more than 42,200 students in academic programs spanning science, engineering, medicine, health, liberal arts, AI, cybersecurity, business, education and more. Each year, it invests more than $486 million to advance research programs, generates an economic impact of $7 billion for Texas, and serves more than 2.5 million patients annually through its comprehensive health system.

Unlocking doors for the Texas workforce

Oct. 3, 2025 — Researchers across disciplines at UT San Antonio are working together toward a common goal. As one example: the discovery that compounds that block pain pathways in oral cancer also have the potential to kill cancer cells.

 

Enhancing the blueprint for student success

Oct. 1, 2025 — In the fourth episode of the five-part podcast series “Launchpad: Voices of UT San Antonio,” Heather Shipley, provost and senior executive vice president for Academic Affairs at UT San Antonio, talks about the academic trajectory of the new university. Shipley highlights potential opportunities for interdisciplinary studies and career-engaged learning, and how those efforts could lead to addressing workforce development needs in healthcare, technology and more.

Sept. 24, 2025 — In the third episode of the five-part podcast series “Launchpad: Voices of UT San Antonio,” Jennifer Sharpe Potter, PhD, MPH, senior executive vice president for research and innovation, discusses the value and outlook for the university after combining two R1 research institutions into one. From eliminating barriers, to inspiring interdisciplinary research, Potter said the endless possibilities of integration will turn ambition into impact.

Sept. 17, 2025 — In the second episode of the five-part podcast series “Launchpad: Voices of UT San Antonio,” UT San Antonio President Taylor Eighmy and Francisco Cigarroa, senior executive vice president for health affairs and health system, discuss how bringing UTSA and UT Health San Antonio together as one world-class university will make lives better throughout the region.

 

Staying power

Sept. 11, 2025 — Most graduates from UT San Antonio’s six health professional schools, located at its Health Science Center, choose to remain in Texas after completing their degrees. This fact is a point of pride, but more importantly, it’s a lifeline for a state facing critical shortages in nearly every health profession.

Sept. 1, 2025 — Taylor Eighmy, PhD, president, The University of Texas at San Antonio, and Francisco G. UTSA and UT Health San Antonio complete merger to become The University of Texas at San Antonio

Sept. 1, 2025 — UTSA and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio) today merged to form The University of Texas at San Antonio (UT San Antonio), a premier global university that is deeply committed to making lives better for the communities it serves. As a merged institution, UT San Antonio now ranks as the third-largest public research university in Texas according to annual research expenditures, behind only Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at Austin.

 

A logo rooted in legacy, launching toward tomorrow

Aug. 28, 2025 — University logos vary in complexity and tone, and are shaped by history, audience and institutional mission. The UT San Antonio logo was crafted to reflect the brand principles, the energy and the shared ambitions of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and UTSA as their integration becomes official Sept. 1, 2025.

 

The color that ties us together

Aug. 25, 2025 — In advance of the Sept. 1, 2025, integration of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and UTSA, a task force of brand designers, strategic communicators and marketing specialists from both institutions not only created a new brand and logo — approved by the Board of Regents in May — but also adopted a new color palette.

 

Taylor Eighmy officially named president of The University of Texas at San Antonio and UT Health San Antonio

Aug. 21, 2025 — Taylor Eighmy, PhD, was officially named president of The University of Texas at San Antonio and UT Health San Antonio Aug. 20 by The University of Texas System Board of Regents. He serves as the inaugural president of the institution created through the merger between The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and The University of Texas at San Antonio, which will be effective Sept. 1. The appointment comes at the end of a year-long process to combine both institutions into a single large university.

 

University name reflects ambitions as preeminent institution

Aug. 11, 2025 — The University of Texas at San Antonio is the new name of the institution created by the integration of two San Antonio powerhouse universities — The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and UTSA. The new university, also called UT San Antonio, is positioned to further enhance San Antonio’s emergence as a vibrant hub for academic, research and innovation excellence in South Texas.

 

The making of a mission statement for a world-class university

Aug. 4, 2025 — As part of its historic integration, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and The University of Texas at San Antonio have adopted a shared mission statement that reflects the values and ambitions of both campuses, while providing a unified vision for the future of this newly combined institution.
