San Antonio (Oct. 31, 2003) – Listeners to San Antonio’s Radio Unica station, 1250 AM, will get a special treat this weekend and next. Radio Unica 1250 AM will broadcast two one-hour health shows in Spanish at noon Saturday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 8. The shows will feature topics discussed by several faculty of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSC).
The Nov. 1 show will provide advance promotion of the free “Passport to Good Health” community health fair set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at the Wal-Mart parking lot, 555 SW Loop 410. The fair is provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Nov. 8 show will reinforce positive messages disseminated at the health fair. Both radio shows will feature a roundtable of experts.
Speakers for the Nov. 1 show from the UTHSC are Dr. Carlos Jaen, department of family and community medicine, and Maria Montez, department of medicine. Topics will include prevention of diabetes through diet and exercise.
Speakers for the Nov. 8 show from the Health Science Center are Dr. Jose Trabal, department of obstetrics and gynecology, who will talk about women’s health, and Dr. Rita Corona Graves, department of surgery. She will discuss prostate cancer and the San Antonio Center of Biomarkers of Risk for Prostate Cancer (SABOR), a study of genetic variations that predispose certain men to prostate cancer.
