Michael Geelhoed, DPT, OCS, MTC, assistant professor and director of clinical education in the Department of Physical Therapy, found ways to help neighbors, his students and the community despite not having power at his home for several days.
He shoveled the driveways of two of his neighbors after both snowfalls last week.
“We all know each other and look out for each other,” he said of his neighborhood. “It was also a great way to stay warm, because I didn’t have any heat in my house.”
Dr. Geelhoed hiked 3.8 miles to and from campus on Tuesday to use the power and internet to record videos and upload them for students — and to take a shower in a basement locker room.
“Even though classes were canceled, school kept going on because it has to,” he said.
On Sunday, he and his wife and two children volunteered with the San Antonio Food Bank, helping to register cars lined up to receive food.
“Once we got our power back and got our own house in order, it was like, ‘Let’s figure out who needs help,’” he said.
