A man’s age, race and diet have a significant impact on how much his prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentration changes over time, according to a report released Dec. 12 by researchers from institutions including the Health Science Center and the Cancer Therapy and Research Center (CTRC).

Noted cancer expert Thomas J. Slaga, Ph.D., joined the Health Science Center this summer as a professor of pharmacology and San Antonio Cancer Institute (SACI) member. Dr. Slaga has been involved with scientific studies of cancer for almost 40 years and has research interests ranging from cancer causation, prevention and control to aging.

Ian M. Thompson Jr., M.D., professor and chair of urology at the Health Science Center, is looking for a better test – or set of tests – to diagnose prostate cancer and to distinguish between cancers that will kill men if left untreated and those that will not threaten health and do not need treatment.
