Supporting the growth of the bioscience industry in our region, the Health Science Center in 2010 awarded a $500,000 incentive grant to bring InCube Labs to San Antonio from San Jose, California. The city of San Antonio, Bexar County, the Texas Research and Technology Foundation and UTSA also partnered in this successful effort. The work continues to pay off today.

An External Advisory Committee for the Health Science Center’s Military Health Institute, comprised of military health experts from across the country, has been formed. The committee held its inaugural meeting Feb. 26 in San Antonio.

With several million dollars in new gifts, momentum continues to grow for the Biggs Institute for Alzheimer and Neurodegenerative Diseases launched in September by the Health Science Center.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. The colon and rectal team of the Cancer Therapy & Research Center and UT Medicine are gearing up for an entire month of education, support and awareness to inform the public about colon cancer facts and prevention.

Janie Canty-Mitchell, Ph.D., has been named chair of the Healthcare Diversity Council (HCDC) board of directors. Dr. Canty-Mitchell serves as professor and chair of the Department of Family and Community Health Systems and interim chair of the Department of Health Restoration and Care System Management in the School of Nursing at the Health Science Center.

Deborah Parra-Medina, Ph.D., M.P.H., a Latino health researcher and professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR) at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, recently became a national research fellow and is co-leading regional health education centers in South Texas.
