Sara Gill, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and associate dean for graduate studies in the School of Nursing, has been named a Distinguished Teaching Professor within The University of Texas System — one of the most prestigious recognitions awarded to faculty across the system’s institutions.

The Distinguished Teaching Professor designation is an honorific title reserved for members of an institutional Academy of Distinguished Teachers who have demonstrated sustained excellence in teaching and mentorship. It reflects a rigorous selection process, including peer nominations, formal reviews and institutional leadership approval.
This honor adds to Gill’s longstanding record of excellence in health science education. She received the UT System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award in 2013 and was inducted into the Kenneth I. Shine Academy of Health Science Education in 2016 — both recognitions of her teaching, mentorship and academic leadership.
A nationally respected nurse scientist and educator, Gill has focused her career on improving breastfeeding incidence, duration and exclusivity — especially among at-risk populations — to promote better health outcomes for mothers and infants.
Her research has been widely disseminated through national and international publications and presentations. She also serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Human Lactation.
“Receiving the Distinguished Teaching Professor designation is a tremendous honor which reflects my deep commitment to student learning, faculty mentorship and academic excellence,” Gill said. “It inspires me to continue fostering an engaging learning environment where every student can thrive. I am motivated by a passion for nursing and a commitment to ensure that we prepare outstanding providers for our community.”
Gill’s designation accentuates her contributions to advancing education and her impact on the next generation of health care professionals. The title will be held throughout her tenure at UT Health San Antonio.
