The Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) of UT Health San Antonio is uniting today, Jan. 11, with all the other National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers in the U.S. in issuing a joint statement urging parents to have their children immunized against human papillomavirus (HPV) and encouraging physicians to recommend it.

Thousands of South Texans take metformin daily to treat their type 2 diabetes, and thousands more take it because they are at risk for the disease. Because of the way metformin works, researchers with the UT Health Science Center’s Barshop Institute for Aging and Longevity Studies want to learn whether the medication might offer other health benefits in older adults and merit broader use.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and the UT Medical Branch at Galveston are teaming up to study how exercise changes the body at the molecular level. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) today (Dec. 13) announced grants to fund the Texas team and other groups nationwide.

John Rugh, Ph.D., from the School of Dentistry at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio, recently received the Evidence-Based Dentistry Faculty Award for accomplished faculty members. It is a joint award from the American Dental Association and the American Association of Dental Research.
